Northampton is the largest market town in the East Midlands and the 4th largest town in the UK not to have official city status. The town greatly increased in population in the 1960s following the New Towns Act of 1946 which came into force partly to house the large numbers of people who had lost homes during the War. Easily accessible from pretty much anywhere, Northampton is steeped in history and tradition. The town has many museums well worth a visit and more than its fair share of adventure parks to keep the kids happy. Northampton hotels are well situated to accommodate visitors to the town and those wanting to use it as base for exploring the county.
The town is served by the both the M1 and the M40 making it easy to get to and from the capital and providing quick and easy access to the North. The railway station is on the West Coast Main Line, offering a good service to London Euston and also up to Birmingham and beyond.
Historically known for shoe manufacturing and for other leather goods, with the exception of a few specialist shoe manufacturers, there is actually very little left of this industry. If you are interested in this however, take a trip to the Central Museum where you will find antique baby shoes as well as seventies platforms boots the likes of which need to be seen to be believed.
The Grosvenor Shopping Mall has many of the usual high street names, open 7 days a week, it has ample parking. The town also has one of the largest market squares which dates back to 1235, a time when Northampton had royal connections, with the King often holding court in the town. The town has a rich heritage and this can be explored in one of the town's many museums. You may need more than a day to squeeze it all in so if you decide to make a weekend, or even a week of it, you will find that Northampton hotels are conveniently located and offer a high standard of service.
The area is well known for its connections to Motorsport, with Silverstone and Rockingham circuit being close by. Some Northampton hotels offer special rates and deals incorporating track days with an overnight stay. Both circuits are easy to find from both the M1 and the M40 although the traffic does get pretty heavy on race days so why not make a weekend of it? There are many hotels catering for Motorsport enthusiasts in Northampton and the surrounding area but it is worth bearing in mind that hotels get busy on race days and it is well worth booking ahead.
If Motorsport is not your thing and you prefer the thunder of hooves to the vroom of a race track then nearby Towcester Race course may be worth a visit. It is one of the country's most scenic National Hunt Racecourses. Running between October and May, the course hosts nineteen National Hunt race meetings each year. Easy to get to, the racecourse is on the main A5 between Northampton and Milton Keynes.
If you just want somewhere to relax, Northampton and the surrounding area has more than its fair share of luxury country house hotels and with spas, leisure clubs and golf courses you won't be disappointed. What was once the reserve of the rich is now very affordable and you will find that many Spa Hotels offer package weekends which include accommodation, meals and treatments. It is also worth noting that relaxing and pampering is no longer just for women, check out some of the treatments available for the well groomed gentlemen.
With the shoe factories nearly gone, Northampton's main industries are finance and distribution, local employers include Barclaycard, the Nationwide Building Society and Blacks Leisure Group. If travelling on business you will find Northampton has a range of centrally located hotels to meet your needs including many with high speed internet access and express check out.
Whatever your reason for travelling to Northampton, whether it is a Motorsport break, a trip to the Adventure Parks with the Kids or for some pampering at a Spa, Northampton has a hotel to suit every budget and style.
